How Ignition Coils Work

Primary Circuit: Low voltage from the battery flows through the ignition coil’s primary winding.

Secondary Circuit: When the current is interrupted, a magnetic field collapses, inducing a high voltage in the secondary winding.

Spark Plug Activation: This high voltage is sent to the spark plug, producing a spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture.

Modern vehicles often use one ignition coil per cylinder (coil-on-plug design), which provides more precise ignition and better overall engine performance.

Common Signs of a Failing Ignition Coil

Types of Ignition Coils

Coil-On-Plug (COP): Each spark plug has its own dedicated coil, providing the most direct and efficient ignition.
